New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has sent a strong message that offshore wind power generation is a big part of New York State’s clean energy future. NYSERDA has taken an aggressive, systematic, and scientific approach to ensure that both saltwater and freshwater offshore wind power is brought online in a way that maximizes both environmental sustainability and community benefits.

In October 2020, NYSERDA officially began work on the Great Lakes Wind Feasibility Study. The Great Lakes Feasibility Study process has followed an in-depth process, considering issues and questions about the feasibility of fresh water offshore wind in Lake Erie.

NYSERDA has stated that they expect to release the results of the study in the latter part of 2022. As we look forward to that release, you can read about the process that has brought us to this point here.

NYSERDA currently has approved a number of saltwater offshore project in New York waters. More information about these projects can be found on the NYSERDA website.
